To prepare our students for a positive middle school experience and be responsible, innovative learners.
Curriculum Focus:
Social Studies – Fifth graders study United States History. We focus on Geography, Early Explorations, Native Americans, The Colonial Era, Causes of the Revolution, and the U.S. Constitution. Students will be involved in interactive activities throughout the year to help make our studies come alive. The students will also be doing a PowerPoint state report.
Science – The primary units of study for fifth graders are Scientific Method, Systems of Living Things, Matter and Energy, Weather and Space. A variety of labs and hands-on activities will be used to engage our students. A science project will be assigned in November, and science camp is always an adventure.
Birthday Policy – We follow the district wellness policy.
Homework- Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. This work is an extension of material taught in class and will give students extra practice. Your child should understand the homework as it has been explained in class, and parent assistance should not be required on most assignments. Math and Language Arts will be assigned each evening. Other homework will be added to this at the teacher’s discretion. Homework is due completed at the beginning of class the next day. Homework should take approximately 50-60 minutes to complete plus 30 minutes of reading. If your child is taking more time to complete his/her work or is consistently having trouble understanding the homework, please your child’s teacher. Homework should not take up all of his/her spare time. Family time, extracurricular activities, and relaxing are important too.
Field Trips - We go on four field trips in 5th grade. We go to the Tech Museum, a Children’s Musical Theater production, science camp, and an end-of-year 5th grade pool party at Los Ranchitos Cabana Club. Information will be given on each of these trips as the dates grow closer.
Volunteers – We welcome parent involvement. Needs vary depending on classroom teacher. Requests for help will be addressed at Back to School Night.
Class Parties - Parties will be determined by your child’s classroom teacher.
